The Magnet Bottleneck

The idea
I believe AI moving into physical machines creates a hidden bottleneck: permanent magnets, whose supply chain still runs mostly through China. Rather than betting on scarce rare earth deposits, this basket bets on the industrial middle, separation, refining, heavy rare earths, magnet manufacturing and recycling, being rebuilt in the West as strategic infrastructure. It weights pure-play magnet and rare earth companies heaviest, adds motor makers, defense, drone and physical-AI names as a second way to win, and keeps some cash on hand to add when smaller names swing.
What it owns
- The integrated US effort to turn domestic ore into finished magnets, which is where government funding and long-term contracts are flowing to rebuild Western supply. · MP MaterialsIt operates the closest US equivalent to a complete mine-to-magnet chain from ore through finished product, making it the first choice if Western governments fund industrial reconstruction., USA Rare EarthIt pursues magnet manufacturing on US soil, betting that Western production capacity will win customers and cement the shift from commodity business to strategic infrastructure., Ramaco ResourcesIt extracts rare earths from coal seams in Wyoming, an unconventional domestic source that gains value only if government treats domestic supply as strategic., NioCorp DevelopmentsIt develops a Nebraska project adding new domestic critical mineral supply including rare earths, living or dying on financing and permitting that reflects government commitment.24%
- Defense systems create magnet dependence so critical that governments fund secure supply at almost any cost, driving uninterruptible demand. · AeroVironmentIt supplies drone fleets by the thousands, and every drone motor requires magnets, creating direct demand that scales with defense procurement., Lockheed MartinIt builds the missiles and defense systems that make rare earth magnets a national security priority, anchoring government demand for both magnets and the magnet supply chain., Kratos DefenseIt builds unmanned aircraft and autonomous defense systems, winning as AI leaves the screen and flying becomes the next production frontier., Leonardo DRSIt supplies electric drive and power systems for military applications, magnet-intensive hardware at the core of military electrification spending.21%
- Companies that convert magnets into torque get paid as industrial automation scales, regardless of which supply chain competitors win. · Regal RexnordIt makes motors and motion components at industrial scale, capturing demand as automation and electrification drive magnet consumption across factories and machines., AMETEKIt supplies precision electromechanical components across aerospace and industrial automation, gaining steady demand as machines that move proliferate regardless of supply chain timing., AllientIt specializes in motion components for robotics and defense, supplying the exact machines this take says will drive magnet demand.17%
- Dysprosium and terbium supply and separation outside China represent the narrowest bottleneck in the magnet chain, where scarcity value concentrates. · Energy FuelsIt already operates rare earth separation in the US today, proving that the industrial middle can exist outside China now rather than eventually., Critical Metals CorpIt holds heavy rare earth deposits in Greenland, the commodity China controls most tightly, and profits only if Western governments pay for supply security outside China., Idaho Strategic ResourcesIt holds US rare earth ground paired with a producing gold business, advancing as domestic deposits gain strategic weight in supply planning.13%
- Humanoid robots, warehouse automation and smart factories create a demand shock for magnets that dwarfs the electric vehicle story. · TeslaIt is developing humanoid robots where each joint requires motors and magnets, making production volume the critical variable for this position., Rockwell AutomationIt powers US factory automation, the layer where artificial intelligence starts actually operating machines in industrial production., SymboticIt deploys robots in warehouses at scale today, representing one of the clearest live examples of AI controlling physical machines in production.13%
- Other · LYSCF, NOPMF9%
- Magnets already embedded in Western economies become regional feedstock if recovery reaches industrial scale, adding supply without requiring new mines. · American Resources (ReElement)Its ReElement division recycles rare earths from old magnets and refines them domestically, scaling if the West treats magnet recycling as strategic infrastructure.2%
