Toll Booths for Humans and Agents

The idea
I think the internet is splitting into humans, credentialed agents, and junk bots, and the money sits in the toll booths that can tell them apart. Businesses that just block automation will lose to those that verify humans, credential agents, and charge for passage, so this basket owns the edge networks, identity and payment rails, and human-proof and risk-scoring layers doing that work, anchored by large-cap names with some cash held back. It's a multi-year structural bet, and I'd rethink it if agent traffic stayed niche or if blocking, not verifying, turned out to win.
What it owns
- Networks that sit in front of web traffic sort humans from agents and bots, then charge for passage by verifying credentials and logging access. · CloudflareIt sits at the edge sorting humans, credentialed agents, and bots, then charges for passage through features that verify signed agents and log crawl traffic., Akamai TechnologiesIt runs edge gates for large enterprises, letting them tell authorized agents from junk bots at scale through bot management and API security tools., F5 Inc.It controls and secures the API traffic agents use to talk to businesses, gaining value if API security and bot defense become a larger share of its work., FastlyIf verification and gating logic moves to edge compute, it could win share it cannot win from faster content delivery alone through edge security and bot tooling., RedditIt charges AI companies for access to human conversation instead of letting bots scrape free, collecting tolls from the content side as data licensing deals expand.26%
- Agents need credentials proving they act for a real person, and these companies issue and check those credentials by extending existing login and access layers. · OktaIt builds identity for non-human actors tied back to a real person or company, turning machine identity from a technical feature into a core product line., MicrosoftEntra gives AI agents their own managed identities inside the systems most businesses already run, handling the credentialing half of agent gating at massive scale., TwilioIt runs the verification plumbing, the codes and checks that prove a human is on the other end at login and checkout gates., ZscalerIts whole model is checking who or what is asking before letting traffic through, which is the gating requirement applied to every connection from employees to agents.21%
- An agent that cannot spend is useless, so the payment rails that let agents transact on a human's behalf collect a toll on the shift to agentic commerce. · VisaIf credentialed agents spend on a human's behalf, most of that spending clears through its rails, and it is building the authorization infrastructure for agent transactions., MastercardAgent Pay is a direct build of agents paying with a credential tied to a real person, routing agentic checkout through card networks rather than around them., PayPalIt is racing to be the wallet an agent uses when it buys on a human's behalf, providing the default payment method inside agent platforms., CoinbaseIf agents pay tiny tolls per request, card rails may be too slow and expensive, and crypto micropayments through its infrastructure could win that layer.18%
- Proving a real human authorized an agent requires checking at the front door, and these companies run the largest human verification networks today. · AlphabetreCAPTCHA is the internet's default human check, and the company is also building agents that need credentialed passage through verified gates., Clear SecureIt builds a biometric network that ties an account to an actual body, the anchor that every agent credential ultimately points back to for proof of a real human., Mitek SystemsIt verifies real-world documents at signup, the moment a human first proves they are human before any agent can act for them.15%
- Every gate needs a score behind it deciding what's a person, what's a sanctioned agent, and what's fraud, and these companies sell that judgment to the gates. · RELX plcIts LexisNexis risk unit sells the identity and fraud data that verification systems check against when proving who is human and who is an authorized agent., Fair IsaacEvery toll booth needs a risk score to decide who passes, and its fraud scoring is the standard that gates already rely on to make that judgment., TransUnionIt is a bureau for identity risk, the record gates consult when deciding whether the entity at the door is a real person.13%
