The idea
I believe the ocean is becoming the world's most important food resource, with farmed fish set to supply nearly all new seafood demand as wild catch stays flat. Instead of betting on the salmon farmers themselves, I own the picks-and-shovels around them: feed and nutrition suppliers, fish health and diagnostics, processing equipment, water and cold chain, plus marine biotech and nutraceuticals turning fish byproducts into higher value products. I spread bets across many names rather than one, and I keep a small cash buffer.
What it owns
- Processing machines, water systems and cold storage are essential infrastructure that every seafood operation requires regardless of competitive dynamics. · JBT MarelIt builds the gutting, filleting and portioning machines that process seafood at industrial scale, the most direct equipment exposure to volume growth., PentairIt supplies the filtration and water-handling systems that recirculating and land-based fish farms are built from at their foundation., XylemIt moves, treats and measures water at the scale that land-based and recirculating fish farms require as the industry expands., EcolabIt provides the sanitation and cleaning systems that seafood processing plants require as a recurring cost tied to processing volumes., LineageIt owns the cold warehouses where frozen and fresh seafood must be stored, generating volume-linked revenue as farmed seafood volumes expand., VeraltoIt makes instruments that test water quality, a constant recurring monitoring need that grows more intensive as fish farm densities increase., Americold Realty TrustIt owns cold-storage warehouses where seafood volumes must pass through, generating occupancy-based returns as global seafood trade grows., Carrier GlobalIt provides transport refrigeration units that keep fish cold from farm to warehouse to store, essential infrastructure for global seafood distribution.40%
- Vaccines and testing are non-negotiable costs that keep dense fish farms operational and prevent catastrophic disease losses. · ZoetisIt leads the salmon vaccine market, a picks-and-shovels business where farmers cannot skip spending as aquaculture expands., IDEXX LaboratoriesIt provides water testing and animal diagnostics that prevent disease outbreaks, the preventative layer farms must fund before problems start., Merck & Co.Its animal health division develops aqua vaccines and sea lice treatments, one of few large-scale players in this specialized segment., Phibro Animal HealthIt develops aqua vaccines within a focused animal health platform, winning approvals as disease pressure on fish farms continues rising.24%
- Farmed fish feed demand is growing faster than wild fishmeal supply, giving suppliers of plant-based proteins and specialty ingredients pricing power. · Archer-Daniels-MidlandIt supplies plant-based proteins and specialty ingredients that replace scarce fishmeal in farmed-fish diets as aquaculture expands globally., Bunge GlobalIt supplies the oilseed proteins and oils that replace scarce wild-caught fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture feed formulations., BalchemIt makes encapsulated minerals and specialty nutrients that improve feed efficiency, which matters most as feed formulations grow more sophisticated.17%
- Converting fish byproducts into high-value collagen, proteins and pharmaceuticals creates margins that far exceed selling whole fillets. · Darling IngredientsIt converts fish trimmings, skin and byproducts into collagen, proteins and oils worth more than the fillet itself at industrial scale., AmarinIt produces a prescription drug from purified fish oil, representing the marine pharma end where ocean-derived ingredients become medicine.11%
