The idea
I think the AI trade prices the chips and fabs but skips the huge layer underneath: assembling, packaging, testing, and wiring every AI server, most of it done across Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines. So I built exposure to that whole layer through US-listed companies whose factories actually sit there, spanning server assembly, packaging toolmakers, chip test houses, optical interconnect, and the connector and memory base underneath, spread across names rather than concentrated in one.
What it owns
- The contract manufacturers assembling AI servers, racks, and networking gear in Penang, Batam, and Thailand for the big chip and cloud companies. · CelesticaIt builds AI racks and networking gear in Batam and across the region for hyperscalers, making it a direct claim on server-builder work in Southeast Asia., JabilIt assembles AI servers in Penang, performing the hundreds-of-billions-dollar work of putting together AI hardware for the world's largest buyers., FlexIt builds racks and power delivery gear for AI data centers out of Southeast Asian factories, capturing the power and infrastructure work below the chips., Benchmark ElectronicsIt manufactures electronics in Thailand, offering exposure to contract manufacturing for AI and data center equipment through regional factory operations., SanminaIt assembles cloud and networking hardware with plants across Southeast Asia, providing manufacturing capacity for the servers powering AI infrastructure.26%
- Advanced packaging is the tightest bottleneck in AI compute right now, and these firms sell the bonders, testers, and inspection tools that layer depends on. · Kulicke & Soffa IndustriesIt makes the bonding machines that assembly houses use to wire chips into packages, feeding the exact packaging layer driving AI chip assembly., Ultra Clean HoldingsIt builds subsystems for chip toolmakers from its Penang operations, sitting one layer below the equipment makers serving advanced packaging buildouts., TeradyneIt builds the test machines that check every AI chip assembled in Southeast Asia, providing the inspection equipment as volumes and complexity grow., CamtekIts inspection machines check advanced packages for defects at scale, addressing the quality control layer as advanced packaging becomes the constraint in AI production., Onto InnovationIt sells the measurement tools that enable advanced packaging to scale, providing the metrology infrastructure that advanced packaging buildouts depend on., CohuIt makes the handlers that physically move chips through testing equipment, serving the test and handling layer as AI chip test volumes grow.25%
- The companies that package and test finished AI chips, with the bulk of that work done in plants across the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Taiwan. · Amkor TechnologyIt is one of the largest outsourced chip assembly and test houses globally, with major plants in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam serving AI chip makers., ASE Technology HoldingIt is the single largest chip packaging and test company in the world, and advanced packaging for AI chips runs through its factories.15%
- AI clusters are stitched together with optical links, and most of the world's transceivers are built in Thailand and Malaysia. · FabrinetIts Thai factories build the optical transceivers that carry data between GPUs in AI clusters, embodying the transceiver production concentrated in the region., CoherentIt makes transceivers and the lasers inside them with major plants in Malaysia, combining optical interconnect technology and regional manufacturing., LumentumIt supplies the datacom lasers that transceivers depend on for data transmission, with manufacturing in Thailand serving the optical layer of AI clusters.15%
- The connectors, power paths, and memory underneath every AI server, made in high volume across Southeast Asian plants. · AmphenolIt makes the connectors and cables inside AI servers in high volume, supplying the interconnect layer that sits underneath every system., Micron TechnologyIts high-bandwidth memory is built and packaged in Singapore and Penang, and every AI accelerator needs stacks of it for compute operations., TE ConnectivityIt supplies the high-speed interconnects that wire AI systems together, providing the physical plumbing connecting components in data center infrastructure.13%
