The idea
I believe self driving scales gradually over the next three to five years, moving from pilot cities to tens of thousands of vehicles on the road. I built this across three layers of US companies only: the ones running the fleets, the chips and sensors every car needs regardless of who wins, and the dispatch platforms and autonomous trucking names the market tends to overlook. Bigger, steadier names make up most of the weight, with smaller lidar and trucking bets sized lightly, and I keep some cash aside to add if prices drop. I'd rethink this if the rollout stalls or shifts outside the US.
What it owns
- Companies operating autonomous vehicle fleets that collect fares directly capture the largest revenue stream once deployed at scale across multiple cities. · Alphabet Inc.Waymo operates autonomous taxi fleets and expands across cities with regulatory approval, directly benefiting from fleet growth and continued business investment., Tesla, Inc.Pursues a pure vision-based approach for autonomous robotaxis and needs regulatory approval across multiple U.S. cities plus removal of safety operators to validate this strategy., Amazon.com, Inc.Funds Zoox to build steering-wheel-free autonomous vehicles and gains returns if the company obtains regulatory clearance, expands to more cities and continues receiving investment capital.33%
- Every autonomous vehicle requires computing chips, cameras and lidar sensors regardless of which fleet operator succeeds, making component suppliers essential across all outcomes. · NVIDIA CorporationSupplies computing power for autonomous vehicle training and onboard processing across competing fleet operators and automakers regardless of which technology path succeeds., QUALCOMM IncorporatedSupplies autonomous driving chips to automakers transitioning from driver assistance to full autonomy, benefiting from continued automaker adoption and growing revenue share from self-driving capabilities., Ambarella, Inc.Produces vision processing chips for camera systems in autonomous vehicles and needs sustained orders from automakers and fleet operators as automotive revenue grows., ON Semiconductor CorporationManufactures image sensors for vehicle cameras and captures higher volume sales as autonomous vehicles deploy more cameras across different sensing systems., Ouster, Inc.Produces lidar sensors for autonomous vehicles and benefits if lidar remains deployed across fleet operators and trucking companies rather than being fully displaced by camera-only approaches., Aeva Technologies, Inc.Develops frequency-modulated lidar technology for speed detection and depends on securing production orders from automakers or trucking companies while maintaining cash until commercialization.32%
- Autonomous vehicles still need passenger interfaces, so ride-hailing platforms that integrate multiple fleet operators into their apps could benefit from expanded networks without operating the vehicles themselves. · Uber Technologies, Inc.Acts as a dispatch platform integrating multiple autonomous vehicle operators into its app, benefiting if fleet companies choose to route passengers through existing marketplaces rather than launching separate apps., Lyft, Inc.Operates the second-largest U.S. ride-hailing platform and benefits if it successfully integrates autonomous vehicle fleets into its network without losing market position to competitors or self-operating vehicles., Lucid Group, Inc.Manufactures vehicles intended for Uber's autonomous robotaxi fleet and requires continued commitment to the vehicle program plus sufficient capital to reach production scale.18%
- Long-haul freight routes follow fixed paths with persistent driver shortages, creating earlier economic viability for autonomous trucking than passenger services in many routes. · Aurora Innovation, Inc.Leads autonomous trucking with expanding routes and vehicle deployments on U.S. highways, requiring continued growth without major safety incidents to validate the business model., Kodiak AI, Inc.Develops autonomous trucking technology and depends on fulfilled freight contracts and sufficient cash reserves to sustain operations through commercialization.8%
