The Packed Room Economy

The idea
Restaurants keep raising prices and the rooms stay packed, so I think people will keep paying up to eat out rather than cook. Instead of picking one winning chain, I own the whole economy: the chains filling tables, the distributors and equipment makers supplying every kitchen, and the payment and software companies that take a small cut of each check. I split the weight across all three groups with a bit of cash on the side to add if things dip, since this is a habit shift I expect to play out over years, not weeks.
What it owns
- Restaurants that sustain full capacity while raising prices demonstrate pricing power in a competitive market. · Chipotle Mexican GrillIt has raised menu prices while maintaining steady customer traffic, showing that demand remains strong despite higher costs., Texas RoadhouseIt runs hour-long waits at sit-down prices, showing that people queue up to pay a premium for a table., Darden RestaurantsIt owns multiple casual dining brands, capturing the packed-room trend across the entire portfolio rather than betting on one concept., Brinker InternationalChili's transformed from slow to crowded, showing that a higher check can revive even an older brand if the room stays full., CAVA GroupIt opens restaurants fast into locations that fill up immediately, capturing the growth end of willingness to pay premium prices for casual dining., WingstopIt grows by selling franchises into demand that has not slowed even as wing prices rose, testing whether eating-out demand stays strong enough to fill new units., Shake ShackIt charges nearly double a regular burger and still draws lines, testing directly whether customers will pay almost anything to eat out.40%
- Distributors and equipment makers that get paid by restaurants across the board, capturing revenue from the entire eating-out ecosystem whether individual locations are busy or not. · SyscoIt delivers food to more American restaurants than anyone, earning on every busy kitchen regardless of whose menu wins., US FoodsIt is the second major supplier pulling up behind every restaurant, capturing steady growth with total eating-out demand., The Chefs' WarehouseIt supplies upscale independent restaurants where checks got much higher and tables remain full., Performance Food GroupIt stocks the independent spots and small chains that make up most of the packed rooms, capturing the long tail of restaurant demand., Lamb WestonIt sells frozen fries that land on nearly every restaurant table, so more meals out means more volume shipped., MiddlebyIt builds the ovens and fryers restaurants buy when they are busy enough to expand or upgrade, betting that packed rooms turn into new kitchens.30%
- Payment and software companies that earn a cut of every transaction, so their revenue grows when restaurant spending rises regardless of which establishment thrives. · ToastIt runs the registers and takes a slice of every transaction at hundreds of thousands of restaurants, so busier and pricier meals flow straight into its revenue., Shift4 PaymentsIt processes payments for restaurants and hospitality, earning a fee on every swipe as bigger checks and packed rooms drive volume through its platform., American ExpressIts cardholders are the affluent customers paying more for tables, and dining is one of their largest spending categories., PAR TechnologyIt sells the ordering and loyalty technology that chains use to handle full houses, winning when chains invest to serve packed rooms.23%
