The idea
I believe the bot traffic flooding the web is becoming a toll road, and the real money goes to whoever runs the tollbooth, not just the content being read. So this leans hardest into Cloudflare and the networks that carry bot traffic, backed by the companies that verify bots, the rails that let them pay per visit, the data centers handling the load, and a handful of content owners already getting paid by AI firms. No single name dominates, it's spread across the whole stack with cash held back, built to play out over years as this shifts from theory to infrastructure.
What it owns
- These networks sit between bots and websites, filtering traffic and setting payment terms so content owners get paid when their material appears in AI answers. · CloudflareIt sits between bots and websites to block, meter and charge each AI visit, having moved from per-crawl pricing to paying publishers when their content appears in AI answers., Akamai TechnologiesIts edge network carries the same bot traffic that generates toll opportunities, so it benefits as long as customers want tools to block or charge for automated visits., FastlyIts edge network handles traffic for media and commerce sites that bots read most, benefiting as bot traffic grows and customers pay for those visits.26%
- Billions of small per-visit payments need infrastructure, and these companies operate the protocols and networks that settle money between bots and publishers. · Coinbase GlobalIt created the x402 protocol enabling bots to pay tiny fees per visit, and stands to earn from the transaction flow as that standard becomes widely used., VisaIt provides a hedge if bot tolls settle through cards rather than cryptocurrency, as it builds payment tools designed for AI agents and stablecoins., MastercardIt is the other major card network building payment infrastructure for AI agents, winning if bots and automated systems pay through its rails., Circle Internet GroupIt issues USDC, the stablecoin that runs x402 micropayments, so every bot visit paid in USDC adds to the money it holds and the interest it earns.20%
- Like record labels on music platforms, owners of widely-read content get paid first when bots use their material, creating a licensing income stream. · RedditAI companies already pay to use its posts because human-written answers are what bots seek, and those licensing deals set a model for content owner compensation., The New York Times CompanyIt is a major content owner collecting steady payments when AI companies use its journalism, similar to how record labels earn when their music is streamed., News CorpIt owns major newspapers and was among the first publishers to sign AI licensing deals, collecting ongoing payments as bots are made to pay for news content.16%
- Before a bot can be charged, it must be identified and verified, creating demand for tools that distinguish automated traffic from human visitors. · F5Its software and hardware help companies distinguish legitimate traffic from bots, and that sorting becomes more valuable as automated requests vastly outnumber human ones., OktaIt handles identity and logins, and could become the system that gives AI agents a verified ID so websites know which bot to bill for its visits., ZscalerIts traffic inspection software becomes more valuable as companies face far more bot and agent activity, requiring deeper security scanning of larger data flows.15%
- As automated traffic grows much larger than human traffic, the data centers and network equipment carrying it all become more heavily used regardless of who collects tolls. · EquinixIts data center buildings house the interconnections between networks and clouds, and more bot traffic means more demand for those connection points and space., Arista NetworksIts network switches move traffic inside data centers, and they need to handle massive growth if automated traffic reaches thousands of times the volume of human traffic., Digital Realty TrustIt rents data center space and power, collecting rent as servers handling bot traffic multiply to meet the surge in automated requests.13%
