AI Can't Install Your Hot Tub

The idea
AI can design your hot tub setup in seconds, but it still can't send an electrician to install it. My bet is that cheap AI planning and demand generation push the real bottleneck toward scarce physical execution, so I'm weighted toward skilled-trades contractors and suppliers, with grid and power equipment as a core layer and heavy logistics and materials as ballast, plus a small cash buffer. It's spread across many names rather than one bet, built to hold for years, and I'd rethink it if physical capacity (labor, equipment, grid buildout) expands faster than demand instead of staying scarce.
What it owns
- AI's electricity appetite runs into a grid that takes years to expand, making the makers and builders of power equipment the toll collectors. · Quanta ServicesIt strings the wires and builds the grid expansion, the skilled labor layer where linemen supply can't keep pace with electricity demand., EatonIt makes the power equipment and transformers that everything AI touches ultimately needs, among the hardest bottlenecks to expand., GE VernovaIt builds the turbines and grid technology that turn AI power demand into electrons, with turbine capacity booked out years ahead., HubbellIt makes the connectors, enclosures and hardware the grid build-out consumes, physical parts no amount of software substitutes for., Powell IndustriesIt builds the electrical control rooms and switchgear that data centers and industrial sites can't run without, scarce in its niche.23%
- Every job needs parts and equipment from these distributors, so they get paid on volume no matter which contractor wins the work. · WatscoIt distributes the air conditioning parts every cooling job needs, paid on volume while HVAC installs stay constrained by crews., Ferguson EnterprisesIt's the counter where plumbers and trades buy their parts, collecting a toll on every job the trades can't keep up with., Wesco InternationalIt supplies the wire, gear and components for electrical and grid work, paid whenever scarce electricians are busy on jobs., FastenalIt sells the fasteners and consumables every job site burns through, a direct meter on how busy physical work actually is., Core & MainIt sells the pipes and parts for water infrastructure, physical work that AI can plan but can't dig without constrained crews.22%
- These companies employ the scarce electricians and mechanics everyone will be bidding for, so more demand flows straight to their pricing. · Comfort Systems USAIt sends the crews that build and cool data centers and factories, with labor as the bottleneck that AI can't multiply., EMCOR GroupIt pools the biggest supply of skilled electrical and mechanical crews in the country, the scarce hands that complex building requires., IES HoldingsIt's a smaller electrical contractor where only so many electricians capable of the work exist, able to raise prices when labor stays tight.18%
- Rail lines, trucking networks and rock quarries are physical capacity that can't be copied in software, steadying the basket. · Union PacificIt owns rail that can't be duplicated, the purest fixed physical capacity that collects tolls when AI-era wealth means more stuff moving., Old Dominion Freight LineIt's the best operator in less-than-truckload freight where trucks, terminals and drivers are the scarce inputs that set pricing., Martin Marietta MaterialsIt owns quarries near where things get built, and rock can't be shipped far or permitted fast enough to meet building demand., Vulcan MaterialsIt owns irreplaceable quarries where AI can design a building in seconds but the rock under it is local and scarce.16%
- When building outpaces the supply of machines, the companies that own and rent the machines gain pricing power. · United RentalsIt owns the largest fleet of machines that contractors rent when busy, so equipment scarcity is literally its product and pricing., Herc HoldingsIt's the smaller rental fleet riding the same squeeze as larger competitors, with more room to grow into equipment scarcity., CaterpillarIt builds the heavy machines that physical expansion requires, with new machine supply that software can't conjure.13%
