AI Bottlenecks With Hard Hedges
EuroFinch@eurofinch
The idea
I believe the AI buildout keeps hitting physical limits before it hits financial ones, so this basket owns the shortages: memory chips, copper and tungsten, power equipment, cooling, and nuclear fuel, split between bottlenecks already under contract and ones the market hasn't priced yet. I avoid pre-revenue nuclear names since rising rates punish distant profits hardest. Gold, silver and a gas-heavy energy sleeve hedge against rate shocks and Middle East flare-ups, and I keep 12% in cash to add if rate volatility knocks these stocks down.
What will be bought
- New data centers wait years for turbines, transformers and cooling systems, giving suppliers pricing power and long order backlogs. · GE VernovaIt builds gas turbines and grid equipment that data centers need, with order backlogs stretching years into the future., Vertiv HoldingsIt supplies cooling and power systems that keep AI chips operating, facing rising demand with each new chip generation., EatonIt makes transformers and switchgear that data centers and utilities cannot source fast enough, keeping lead times extended., Powell IndustriesIt builds custom switchgear for routing large power amounts, with extended lead times as data centers and utilities compete for capacity.20%
- Data centers and power grid upgrades require vast amounts of copper, while export restrictions have made tungsten outside China scarce. · Freeport-McMoRanThe largest US copper miner benefits from sustained copper scarcity driven by data center and grid expansion., Southern CopperIt operates large low-cost copper mines that remain profitable even if copper prices moderate from current levels., Almonty IndustriesIt mines tungsten outside China and benefits as US and Western buyers source supply away from China-restricted exports., Hudbay MineralsIt is a smaller copper miner with growing output, positioned to benefit more from copper scarcity if new production stays on schedule.16%
- AI servers need stacked memory faster than chipmakers can supply it, creating years-long backlogs at current capacity. · Micron TechnologyHigh-bandwidth memory for AI chips is sold out through multiple years ahead, keeping pricing power and utilization high., SandiskIt makes flash storage that AI data centers fill with data, earning higher margins while flash supplies remain constrained., Lam ResearchIt sells semiconductor manufacturing equipment to memory makers expanding capacity to close the supply gap.15%
- Most new data centers run on natural gas, while oil protects the take if geopolitical shocks spike crude prices. · Williams CompaniesIt operates gas pipelines paid by throughput volume, benefiting as new data centers and power plants connect to its network., EQT CorporationIt is a major US natural gas producer, benefiting as data centers shift power generation toward gas-fired capacity., Exxon MobilIt is a low-cost oil major positioned to hold value if geopolitical disruption pushes crude prices sharply higher.14%
- Record government debt creates demand for precious metals that hedge the take's growth-dependent holdings. · SPDR Gold SharesGold holds value when growth-dependent holdings fall, protecting the take during stress periods., Agnico Eagle MinesIt is a well-run gold miner with operations in stable regions, earning more per ounce when gold prices rise., iShares Silver TrustSilver has fallen substantially from recent highs, offering hedge value as government debt rises and industrial demand from solar and electronics persists.12%
- Reactors restarting and extending operation to power AI need uranium enrichment that remains in short supply. · CamecoIt is one of the largest uranium suppliers outside Russia, positioned to capture fuel demand from reactor restarts and extensions., Centrus EnergyIt is one of the few US companies enriching uranium, filling a supply gap as the US reduces reliance on Russian enrichment., BWX TechnologiesIt makes reactor components and nuclear fuel today, generating current revenue from government and utility orders rather than speculative timelines.11%
